It has been observed, that much like their animal counterparts, the familiar and stable whale can be underwater for only a certain amount of time before it risks drowning. Every so often they must come up for a breath of fresh air to breath new life into their depleted lungs.

Drawn by the pull of the refuge, they find an ocean of fresh air to bathe in and find that coming up isn't worth dipping too far down.
